"It's like Bruce, quote, fell off the face of the earth." — Investigator (as quoted in Cold Case Files)
"I don't know why I got involved with these individuals." — Bruce Blackwood (as recalled by a friend)
"It's not about committing the perfect crime. It's how to clean it afterwards." — Lewis Perez (as heard in recorded confession)
This episode of Crime Junkie chronicles the perplexing disappearance and subsequent murder of Bruce Blackwood, a routine-oriented manager of an off-track betting parlor. Blackwood's absence was first noted when he called in sick with a vague explanation of a fall in the tub, an excuse that his close friend and co-workers found suspicious due to the unusual timing and lack of further communication. The investigation, initially handled by local police and later taken up by the NYPD Cold Case Squad, faced significant hurdles, including a lack of immediate physical evidence and the disappearance of a key figure, "Mike," who was reportedly seen with Blackwood shortly before his vanishing.
The investigation eventually zeroed in on Lewis Perez, a handyman who rented one of Blackwood's properties. Suspicion grew as Perez was seen driving Blackwood's car, and it was discovered that Blackwood had reported several forged checks made out to Perez. Further digging revealed Perez's violent criminal past, including a prior prison sentence for attempted kidnapping and assault. Despite the mounting circumstantial evidence and the suspicion of homicide, the case remained stalled for years due to the lack of definitive proof, leading to frustration for Blackwood's family and friends.
A turning point came when the Daily News published an article that reignited public interest and prompted the reclassification of the case to homicide. Detective Stradford of the NYPD Cold Case Squad took over and, through further investigation, uncovered financial records showing Perez's purchases of unusual items like plastic sheeting and sulfuric acid, suggesting a potential attempt to dispose of a body. The case finally broke when Perez's daughter, Irene, came forward with a recorded confession from her father detailing the murder, including how he killed Blackwood by snapping his neck and subsequently dismembered and disposed of his body, all to avoid returning to prison for forging checks. This confession, after initial quality issues and a retrial with enhanced audio, led to Lewis Perez's conviction for second-degree murder and a sentence of 25 years to life.
