The circumstances surrounding Patty's departure were unusual: she was instructed not to bring clothes, planned to hide in the bed of her boyfriend's truck to avoid being seen, and her boyfriend claimed they would buy new items in Canada. Marcia's concern grew when Patty failed to make contact as planned.
As Marcia's worry escalated, she attempted to reach Patty and her boyfriend. The boyfriend's evasive and dismissive responses to Marcia's inquiries about Patty's whereabouts heightened suspicions. Upon filing a missing person's report, Marcia contacted the boyfriend's wife, revealing the affair and Patty's disappearance. While the wife expressed initial disbelief, she later engaged with investigators. Police investigation revealed Patty had left work as scheduled, but her subsequent movements were unknown. The boyfriend, when questioned by police, denied any significant relationship with Patty, claiming they were mere co-workers.
Further investigation uncovered several pieces of circumstantial evidence: Patty had loaned her boyfriend a substantial amount of money, reportedly around $90,000, accumulated through her 401k, a second mortgage, and other financial liquidations. This financial strain and the boyfriend's alleged promise of a future together with Patty, contingent on him buying out his business share, is considered a potential motive. Evidence found at the boyfriend's property included a birthday card from Patty, a t-shirt from a Florida trip they allegedly took, and a letter from Patty detailing her feelings for him. Crucially, cadaver dogs alerted to a patch of freshly poured concrete on his property, and a truck bed cover, which Patty was reportedly meant to hide under, was found in storage, bearing a tiny speck of blood and cat hairs matching Patty's cat. However, the limited amount of blood and the underdeveloped forensic technology of 2001 meant the blood evidence could not be conclusively used. Despite the accumulation of circumstantial evidence, the lack of a body or definitive physical proof has prevented the case from moving forward legally, leaving Patty's daughter without answers.
