"I've never regretted anything so much. I was young and headstrong and foolish. Emphasis on the last part." — Gary Sharra (via confession letter)
This episode of Crime Junkie revisits the tragic story of Lisa Seagard, a young woman murdered in Aguwa, Massachusetts. Lisa, a recent college graduate aspiring to be a teacher, was working a second job at a gift shop called Britney's when she disappeared on April 16th. Her absence was noted by both her workplace and her mother, initiating a search that led to the discovery of signs of a struggle and blood splatters in the back room of Britney's. The investigation initially faced a wide time window for the crime, but witness tips helped narrow it down to a 30-45 minute period between her last sale and another customer entering the empty store, hearing muffled noises from the back.
Days later, Lisa's body was discovered in a wooded area, revealing she had been sexually assaulted and stabbed. The investigation initially focused on local suspicions, particularly on Ed Porcotti Jr., due to his association with Lisa's boyfriend, but he was eventually cleared through DNA evidence. As leads dwindled, the case went cold for decades. A significant breakthrough occurred in 2016 when the Hampden County DA's office utilized DNA phenotyping technology to create composite sketches of the assailant, narrowing the suspect pool based on physical characteristics.
This new approach eventually led investigators back to Gary Sharra, a local man who had previously come to their attention via a tip from his estranged wife in 1993. Despite multiple interviews over the years, Sharra consistently refused to provide DNA. However, in 2017, with a court-ordered warrant, police were close to obtaining his DNA. Before they could execute it, Sharra's girlfriend came forward with letters he had written, including a full confession to abducting, assaulting, and murdering Lisa, stating events spun out of his control and expressing deep regret. The episode concludes with Sharra being apprehended at a hospital after an attempted suicide and subsequently pleading guilty to Lisa Seagard's murder, receiving a life sentence.
